Small Hydropower Unit
The Small Hydropower Unit was established in 2004 with the objective of conducting research into, and carrying out the development of, small hydropower potential on the Sokoto and Rima Rivers — particularly across Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States.
The unit has a laboratory for conducting research, testing and demonstration, with which it has identified a number of potential small hydropower sites on the two rivers. It intends to verify and update these sites in order to determine the various heads available at each.
The unit has developed and tested a laboratory-simulated model of a hydro-electric power plant, for the benefit of young and upcoming students interested in hydro-derived renewable energy. It has also developed, and is testing, a model hydro-electric plant with an overhead water tank providing a simulated head. After testing, that plant is intended to serve as a model for rural electrification.
Site Identification
Potential small hydropower sites have been identified on the Sokoto and Rima Rivers, with verification and updating planned to determine the head available at each site.
Laboratory Modelling
A laboratory-simulated model of a hydro-electric power plant supports research, testing and demonstration, and serves as a teaching resource for students.
Pumped Storage Demonstration
A pumped-storage micro hydropower demonstration system with an overhead tank provides a simulated head, paired with a turbine fabricated locally at the Centre.
