Linkages
The Centre, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria, entered into a linkage agreement with the School of the Built Environment, University of Nottingham, England, for the training of its staff. Three members of the Centre’s staff have benefited from the programme.
The Centre is also in collaborative partnership with the Centre for Basic Space Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and with other relevant research institutes across the country.
Under its mandate, the Centre is required to collaborate with similar institutions and bodies engaged in solar and other renewable energy research, development and training as a joint venture partner.
Energy Commission of Nigeria
Has supervised and funded the Centre since 1988. Considers and recommends the Centre’s budget as part of the national energy research programme.
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto
The Centre’s host university. Its Senate established the Centre in 1982, the Vice-Chancellor chairs the Governing Board, and postgraduate programmes are run with the Department of Chemistry.
University of Nottingham, England

Collaborative research partnership with the Centre for Basic Space Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
National Directorate of Employment
Sponsored SERC-run training for 400 unemployed graduates in solar PV design, sizing and installation, and 140 graduates in wind turbine construction and installation.
Education Trust Fund
Commissioned the Centre in 2003 as consultant for solar electrification projects in fifteen schools across the country, and for supervision of solar PV laboratories in 15 locations.
United Nations agencies
The Centre has undertaken consultancy services for UNESCO, UNDP and UNIDO, including feasibility studies on solar PV application sponsored by UNDP and PHCN.
STEP B Centre of Excellence
The Federal Ministry of Education’s Science and Technology Education Post-Basic project granted provisional support of USD 4.2 million for SERC to emerge as a Centre of Excellence in renewable energy.
Postgraduate Collaboration
To sustain human and institutional capacity building for the science, engineering and technical skills relevant to the design, development, fabrication, installation and maintenance of renewable energy technologies, the Centre — in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry — commenced postgraduate programmes in renewable energy studies (M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D) in November 2008. The programme is aimed at developing a critical mass of scientists and engineers for research, development and manufacturing capability in renewable energy technologies for both secondary and tertiary institutions.
