Mandate of the Centre

The Sokoto Energy Research Centre was established to carry out research and development, public enlightenment and information dissemination, as well as manpower development, in the renewable energy sector — comprising solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, biomass, wind and meteorology, small hydropower and services. The other elements of the Centre’s mandate are set out below.

1. To organise and carry out research in the most economical and effective means available locally for harnessing solar and other renewable energy as complementary and/or alternative sources of power.
2. To investigate the appropriate designs of solar and other renewable energy equipment and appliances for domestic, agricultural and industrial uses, and to develop, produce and test prototypes of the same.
3. To serve as a centre for the development of manpower and training in solar and other renewable energy technologies.
4. To investigate the uses of solar-powered equipment in combination with other energy sources.
5. To investigate the efficiencies of solar and other renewable energy systems with a view to developing more efficient ones, and to study the problems of solar and other renewable energy storage.
6. To disseminate the results of research and development efforts in solar and other renewable energy sources through seminars, conferences, public awareness programmes and the publication of directories and journals.
7. To serve as a resource centre offering advisory and research facilities, especially for postgraduate work, and to offer consultancy services.
8. To collaborate with similar institutions and bodies engaged in solar and other renewable energy research, development and training as a joint venture partner.
