How the Centre is Organised
In order to ensure the efficient and effective execution of its mandate, the Centre is structured into a set of research and administrative units: Solar Photovoltaic; Solar Thermal; Biomass; Wind and Meteorology; Small Hydropower; Services; and Administration and Finance. An Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit supports the whole Centre.
The research units operate in an integrated manner to conceive, design and execute research and development projects, while the Administration and Finance Unit provides the supporting back-up.
The ERATA Committee, Management Committee, Staff Appointment and Promotion Committee and Senior Staff Committee operate alongside this structure.
Solar Photovoltaic Unit
Carries out research and development in solar photovoltaic technology, including solar cell materials and technology, inverters and charge controllers, and system design and implementation. The unit comprises both research and technical staff.
Solar Thermal Unit
One of the four original units established in 1982. Conducts research and development in the use of direct solar radiation for solar drying, water heating, distillation and cooking.
Biomass Unit
Also established in 1982. Researches the efficient utilisation of biomass materials and related systems, including biogas, biofuels, and coal, saw-dust and improved wood stoves.
Wind / Meteorology Unit
Studies and records weather events and serves as the data bank for the Centre; every research unit depends on its data. It also handles research, development and manpower training in wind energy conversion systems.
Small Hydropower Unit
Established in 2004 to conduct research into small hydropower potential on the Sokoto and Rima Rivers, particularly across Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States.
Services Unit
Responsible for the construction of all the renewable energy systems developed by the research units of the Centre, using the Centre’s own workshop machinery.
ICT Unit
Provides ICT equipment and facilities across both sites, including an access laboratory, internet access, a VSAT and a radio-frequency wireless network. Staff salary and information systems are automated.
Administration & Finance Unit
Provides the administrative and financial back-up that supports the integrated work of the research units.
ICT Objectives
All research activities in the Centre are online, and staff are equipped with the skills to conduct online research in line with the Centre’s ICT objectives:
- To provide a conducive environment equipped with ICT facilities for effective research activities.
- To provide researchers with the necessary infrastructure for effective communication at all locations within and outside the Centre.
- To provide access to networks at all levels for collaborative research.
- To provide a reliable data management system for research, staff and financial records.
- To provide the skills required for operating and managing the ICT equipment in the Centre.
